Small Grants -- Spring 2008

  • Civil War Social ($1090) - Collaborative grant requested by the High School teachers Miller, Welch, and McHugh.  Students visit Lutz Franklin School; dress in period costumes and meet reenactors.  One social each semester.
  • King Lear Play ($361.00) – Twenty (20) tickets for play for AP English. Requested by High School teacher Barb Psathas to promote understanding of a Renaissance Tragedy. 
  • Robot Kits ($1379.45) – Collaborative grant request by High School teachers Tracy Knapp and Jessica Sloan.  Students will build and program calculator controlled robots that will attach to a graphing calculator to record and analyze data.
  • World Cultural Symposium ($700.00) – Honoraria fees and refreshments to host panel discussion on various world cultural beliefs and customs.  Targeted for High School World Cultures class and requested by Jessica Friday.
  • Mentor Program ($408.71) – This program is to fill the void left by the Big Brother/Big Sister program.  Fifteen older students will be trained by a mental health specialist to work with elementary students.  Submitted by Russell Caravan, Middle School Mental Health Specialist.
  • Professional Development ($963.60) – Fund four (4) modules for six Kindergarten teachers for early reading intervention.  Requested by Elementary teacher, Victoria Zuck and Coordinator of Academic Services, Vivian Demko.

Special Grant

  • Elmo ($1700.00) – Purchase of a document camera for the Sixth Grade Team.  Applicable to math models, writing samples and science labs.

Small Grants – Fall 2008

  • Stock Market Game ($145) – Eight student teams comprised of 30 kids.  Learn about buying and selling stocks.   Requested by middle school teachers Marsilio/Gilly.
  • Creative Writing Club ($500.00) – Publication materials to create school literary magazine. Requested by High School Teacher  Megan Kern
  • Day Out ($270.00) – Five to seven special education students will learn about nutrition and basic life skills by selecting a recipe, purchase groceries, prepare meal s and experience lunch at the SV Diner.
  • Landscaping ($350.00) – Landscape project by middle school math students whereby they calculate area and perimeter, create scale drawing, purchase materials and complete landscaping.  Requested by David Lloyd.
  • Blackboard ($500.00) – Purchase on-line tool for course information, content and homework. Requested by Cheryl Blaukovitch, High School Science.
  • Art Club ($750.00) – Purchase of materials to start club and fees for visiting artists.  Requested by Felicia DeLosReyes, Art Teacher.
  • Mock Trial ($350.00) – Participate in Pennsylvania Bar Association Mock Trial Competition.  Requested by High School Social Studies teacher Rita Chuhran.
  • Study of Bones ($725.00) – Study a modern set of bones using forensic science techniques.  Requested by Kristin Richmond, Middle School Science teacher.
  • Instrumental Clinics ($200) – Professional fees for 4 instrumental specialists to conduct clinics.  Requested by Kevin O’Connell, Music Department.

 Small Grants – Late Fall 2008

  • Beyond The Walls ($753.00) – 12 academically and economically at risk children to visit 3 local venues; Crayola, Museum of Art, and LV Airport.  Submitted by Carol Tavormina, Vivian Demk and Patti Deutsch.
  • Aquarium ($750.00) – Purchase of two marine aquariums for plants, coral and fish.  To be used in the field of science as requested by Karen Pummer.
  • Senteo Response System ($2000.00) -   Response Technology (clickers) for math instruction and assessment. Collaborative grant from Elizabeth Allen and Tracey Knapp.
  • Ceramic Mural ($2700.00) – Permanent art mosaic for the elementary school.  Visiting artist to provide hands on instruction for design and creation of mural and work with all fourth graders during art class as well as an after school workshop.  Submitted by Art teacher, Zaharoula Roumeliotis.
  • Podcasting Plots ($1375.00) – Site license to create podcasts.  Submitted by fifth grade language arts teachers Kemper and Gazzana.

 Small Grants – Spring 2009

  •  Imaginetic Gel boards ($215.24) – Tablet like magnetic boards used with a magnetic stylus.  Awarded to Elementary teacher, Amanda Bellucci.
  • Aquarium ($530.00) –Additions of live rocks, sponges and fish to existing aquarium that was provided through prior grant. Submitted by Middle School science teacher, Karen Pummer.
  • Orienteering - ($277.95) -   Extension course in the Middle School.   Students will learn to use a compass and read maps.  Proposed by Physical Education teacher, Philip Russell.
  • Story of Survival ($545.00) – A Holocaust survivor to speak about the importance of education and acquiring tradesman skills to overcome hardships in life.  Submitted by High School Social Studies teacher, Michelle Horvath.  All Junior and Senior students to benefit.
  • Fatal Vision Goggles ($695.00) – Purchase of six pairs of goggles that are used as a training tool to demonstrate the effects of alcohol impairment.  Grant proposed by the High School Physical Education teacher, Pamela Youngkin.

Small Grants -- Fall 2009

  • Watch D.O.G.S  ($640.00):  A nationwide program that brings Fathers or Grandfathers into school one day to perform tasks such as greeting students, and helping in class.  Awarded to Elementary school teacher, Patti Deutsch.
  • Marine Aquarium ($750.00):  Purchase of a Reverse Osmosis System and additional  rocks and food for the Middle School aquarium.  This is an add-on to a previously approved grant.  Awarded to Karen Pummer.
  • View through the Shutter ($1381.00):  Purchase of 4 digital cameras for Middle School extension class.  Other uses to be yearbook, and school calendars.  Awarded to  Kim Young.
  • Senteo Response System ($1800.00):  Onsite training for Senteo Response System to include up to 15 teachers.  Submitted by Lisa Allen, High School Math Teacher.
  • Poetry Café ($500.00) :  Create coffeehouse in the High School courtyard and bring in 3-4 performers to recite works.  Students will have opportunity to present original works.  Submitted by Genia Miller.
  • Cozy Reading Room ($1545.00):  Purchase of modular furniture for a recreational space in the High School Library.  Submitted by Amber Ziemba.
  • Model U.N. ($700.00):  A trip to and tour of  the United Nations in New York City for club members and other interested students in social studies.  Awarded to Jessica Friday in the High School.
  • Digital Display Board ($1475.00):  Purchase and installation of a flat screen television in the High School.  To be used for announcements, promote school spirit and emergency information.  Submitted by High School Administration.
  • Video Animations ($1493.00):  Create video animations using 3 digital cameras, 4 flip video camcorders and play dough.  Awarded to Fifth Grade Language Arts Team.
  • ELMO ($750.00):  Purchase of a TT-02RX document camera for Middle School Music Teacher, Annelle Conover.

Smalll Grants -- Spring 2010

  •  Model U.N. ($225.00) Additional monies requested for Model U.N. club to visit UN in NYC and Tenement Museum.  Awarded to High School teacher, Jessica Friday.
  • “Isn’t This Glorious($525.00) Purchase of 25 books, “Isn’t this Glorious”, for summer reading assignment and have authors come into classroom to share research.  Conditional upon Saucon Valley School Board subsequent approval of these books.  Awarded to Robert McHugh, High School Social Studies Department Chair.
  • Pottery Wheel ($425.00) Purchase of pottery wheel for the Middle School.  Awarded to art teacher, Felicia Parish.
  • Fluency with Technology ($1500.00) Purchase of (6) ipods with voice recorders so that students can record their voices while reading and playback to hear and practice fluency skills.  Awarded to Reading Coordinator K-8, Lara McCarthy.
  • Mural ($1500.00) Artist to design panther logo for district use and, with students, paint logo on the dugout facing the High School parking lot.  Awarded to High School Art teacher, Sandra Eckert.
  • Projector ($792.00) Projector for previously funded ELMO.  Awarded to Middle School music teacher, Annelle Conover.
  •  Mini DV Videos ($500.00) Purchase of two camcorders for Middle School T.V. Studio to create stories and interviews for morning announcements.  Awarded to Charles Austin.
  • Listening Center ($1500.00) Create four listening centers with the purchase of MP3 players for the Middle School and Elementary School library.  Equipment will enable 4 students for each center to listen to downloaded books.  Awarded to Librarians, Meredith Lesney and Joanna Lemay.
  • 40 Years of Silence ($750.00) Film screening of 40 Years of Silence which is about the genocide in Indonesia and how it continues to affect families today.  Grant is for the purchase of the screening and to host film director and a panel of experts.  Awarded to Michelle Horvath, High School Social Studies.

  • Writing Club ($540.00) F10-007:  Purchase of publishing materials for writing club and transportation of club members and students in the Creative Writing class to the DeSales Poetry Festival.  Awarded to High School teacher Megan Kern.
  • Kinder-garden ($170.00) F10-008:  Materials to create herb garden for Kindergarten students to cultivate and maintain.  Awarded to Elementary School counselor, Bonnie Mims.
  • Problem Solving Circle ($245.00) F10-009:  Award to purchase paint supplies to create a “Problem Solving Circle” on the elementary school playground to help students resolve conflicts.  Awarded to Elementary School counselor Bonnie Mims.
  • Tree Mosaic ($2500.00) F10-010:  A 6x8 mosaic that reflects the Amazon rain forest as depicted in the 4th grade reading assignment, The Great Kapok Tree.  Grant is for materials and artist fee and is awarded to Jacqueline Roumeliotis, Elementary Art Teacher
  • Connecting Technologies ($1565.00) F10-011:  Combining electronic pen and tablets with music to create math videos, homework tutors, and podcasts for 6th grade students.  Awarded to Middle School teacher Jennifer Rubery.
  • Noodle Bib ($240.00) F10-012:  One year software subscription for all High School students that will teach them to search intelligently, record, organize and format correct MLA content.
  • Music with Drums ($2425.00) F10-013:  HealthRHYTHMES is a drumming protocol that is a proven tool for communication and stress management.  Grant is to purchase 10 drums and the cost of a facilitator for (4) training sessions.  This grant is intended for the mentoring program which is lead by Russell Carawan
  •  Global Positioning Systems (GPS) (1984.35) F10-001:  Purchase of 14 GPS units to be used in the plotting of longitude and latitude and for use in 5 mapping lab units.  Awarded to Middle School teacher Kim Young.
  • Hallway Improvement Project ($1331.46) F10-002:  This is a request from Patricia Farrell in the high school Guidance Department to purchase enclosed bulletin boards and display rails to improve the look of the high school hallway and foster a better means of communication with students as it relates to college information, college rep visits and employment opportunities.
  • College Tour ($800.00) F10-003:  Provide funds for a field trip to a local college which will include a tour, observing a lecture, and meeting with the Admissions Office to ask questions.  This grant is awarded to Chad Shirk, High School teacher, and will be incorporated into his class, Career Explorations.
  • Bamboo Tablet/Pen ($398.00) F10-004:  Purchase of 2 teacher drawing tablets for use with digital drawing, painting, and creating instructional videos.  Awarded to middle school teachers Felicia Parish and David Lloyd.
  • Student Tablets/Pen ($1380.00) F10-005:  Purchase of 20 student drawing tablets.  Awarded to Felicia Parish and David Lloyd. 
  • Book Club Novels($745.00) F10-014; Purchase of eight copies of ten novels for newly formed book club. Awarded to High School English teachers Maya Kowalcyk, Megan Hauser, and Megan Kern.

Small Grants- Spring 2011

  • Middle School Book Club($225.00) S11-001: Purchase of twenty-five books for the after school book club awarded to Middle School Librarian, Meredith Lesney.
  • Middle School Author Visit($1400.00); Author Yoko Kawashima Watkins has been invited to speak to all middle school students about her books, specifically So Far From the Bamboo Grove, which is a sixth grade reading assignment. In her presentation, the author shares her personal experiences as a refugee in Japan following World War II and describes Japanese culture and life lessons
  • Physical Education Sports Packages ($285.00) S11-003– Partially funded grant awarded to High School P.E. teachers, Ms. Friend, Ms. Youngkin, and Mr. Sams for the purchase of two sports and activities packets which include CD’s, printed reading materials and student worksheets.   This grant is targeted for students who are either injured or elect to not participate.
  • Tech Fitness ($1440.00) S11-004; Purchase of two Xbox 360 Kinect Bundles along with two flat screen T.V.’s and three exercise programs.  This grant is awarded to Middle School P.E. teachers Philip Russell and Kathleen Wagner.  It will provide differentiated instruction for those students who have physical and behavioral limitations.
  • Flat Classroom ($403.00) S11-005: Purchase of (30) books, The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman and a subscription to Flat Classroom.  Using Web 2.0 tools, the Flat Classroom project enables students to engage with students around the world and encourages global collaboration.  This is awarded to High School Social Studies teacher, Jessica Friday.
  • Reflection Gallery ($400.00) S11-006; Framing materials to create a rotating art gallery in the Elementary School.  Grant awarded to Art teacher, Jacqueline Roumeliotis.
  • iPads ($1700.00)S11-007; Grant was submitted by High School Librarian, Amber Ziemba, for the purchase of iPads for the library.  Foundation approved the grant provided the iPads are awarded to the Technology Council, of which Ms. Ziemba will be invited to participate on, so as to evaluate the usefulness and to make recommendations as to which departments/schools are best served by this technology.  This grant is considered a research grant to provide the district and foundation with valuable feedback on this technology for larger technology infrastructure decisions. Grant is approved for the purchase of (3) iPads and a $200.00 gift card for applications. 

Small Grants- Fall 2011

  • Outdoor Classroom ($2316.44) F11-001; This grant is to be used to create an outdoor classroom/sculpture garden with picnic tables/flowers and cedar planters.  The area is located outside of the High School Art Room.  It is awarded to High School Teacher Sandra Eckert.
  • Weather on the Go ($842.00.00) F11-002; Purchase of science backpacks to be used for outdoor field study for first grade weather curriculum.  Backpacks include weather measuring instruments such as thermometers, wind meters, weather vanes and cloud charts.  Grant awarded to Elementary teacher, Jennifer Burkholder.
  • Classroom on the Go ($572.00) F11-003; Purchase of science backpacks for outdoor field study to supplement third grade water curriculum.  Backpacks include water test kits, table tennis balls, and stopwatches. Grant awarded to Elementary teacher, Stephanie Laudenslager.
  • ASCD Annual Conference ($1450.00) F11-004; This grant is to pay for registration fees for three Elementary teachers to attend the ASCD Conference in Philadelphia for professional development as well as the cost of three teachers to participate on a virtual basis.  Grant was submitted by Elementary teacher, Lora McCarthy.
